Vetiveryl acetate could be described as a hybrid molecule, half synthetic and half natural. It is a fraction of vetiver oil distilled from the roots of an Indian grass, which is then "crossed" with acetic acid to remove the bitter and leathery notes of the root.
In India, vetiver essence was an ancient perfume ingredient and was known as "the oil of tranquility." Vetiver is known for reducing anxiety and promoting mental clarity through the comforting and stimulating powers of its aura.
For Molecule 03, Geza gave a modernist twist to vetiveryl acetate, the refined vetiver note celebrated for its earthy, smoky facets and its rich, enveloping nature. Think of uncut grass on a hot day, or imagine a forest blurred with warm balsamic notes, and you have an idea of how vetiver smells.
"We all know the appeal of vanilla, grapefruit, and musk, but some ingredients take time to understand. Vetiver is one of them. It is a Marmite ingredient; you either love it or you reject it. I love it," says Geza Schoen. "Molecule 03 has the complexity needed to stand on its own because it is half natural. The acetylation enhances the grapefruit touch of vetiver, giving it a more pronounced bitter, fresh top note. I love this, especially for the way the grapefruit blends with the warm, woody character of the vetiver itself."
